The Sport mode modification requires the addition of pin 15 in connector X60004. When a momentary ground is applied to this pin, Sport Mode is toggled. We also add pin 8 in connector X17 in the instrument cluster to light the cluster lamp. This wants 12V to light the cluster lamp.
I designed a small microcontroller-based module to interface to the DSC unit and the DME (for Sport mode). I named it 'Sport Mode Mini Module' because it was the smallest of the designs I developed. It talks to the DSC unit for DSC, and the DME for Sport mode. It interfaces with the DSC button and an Apem IP LED-illuminated pushbutton (for Sport mode).
Below is a picture of two modules, each fitted into the bottom of their cases.
Three more boards are assembled, for which I have cases. These are for Drex, z3scot, and Mpire. A fourth is in line for MarkL, and a fifth for Dale.
I now have AWG20 wire for harnesses. I'm still waiting on other harness parts (more pin sleeves and connector housings). Sadly, the holidays seemed to push everything back.
Mouser contacted me today to tell me there's been yet another delay on the Apem IPR3FAD2LOS pushbuttons. They're now saying that my last order (placed December 15, 2003) won't arrive until the third week of February. Sadly, this appears to be the situation from other suppliers as well, and Kim @ Mouser told me that it's not a minimum order issue; Apem is backlogged on all of the LED-illuminated IP pushbuttons.
The module needs to send pulses for DSC and Sport Mode, and light/unlight the Sport Mode lamp in the cluster and the LED in the Apem IP pushbutton. In the case of Sport Mode, I need to momentarily pull pin 15 in connector X60004 to ground. For DSC, I need to momentarily pull pin 4 on the DSC button connector (which leads to the DSC module) to +12V (see 3452.1-02 in the ETM). To light the Sport cluster lamp, I need to put 12V on pin 8 in connector X17.
