Master Bathroom Diary

I continued the spackling and joint compound work for the second vanity
light fixture. It will probably need one more sand and skim before I
can call it done.
- September 12, 2015
-
I started working on the second vanity fixture. Removing the old one
revealed a large rough hole similar to the one found when removing the
first fixture. The good news for this one: it was almost centered above
the sink, and there was no PVC waste pipe behind it. Hence I was able
to use one of the circular rework boxes I bought by cutting a round
hole. The box is installed and I test-fitted the fixture before starting
the spackling work. I'm glad that I bought a cheap digital torpedo level
earlier this week. Using it with one of my 60" straightedges made
it easier to get the second fixture at exactly the same level as the
first fixture. I couldn't have done it with my 4' level since it isn't
long enough and it's too hard to juggle it with the straightedge and a
pencil when standing on the edge of the sink. And bubbles aren't
perfect in use, whereas the digital reading is in .1 degree increments
and is easy to read (big, and bright backlight). Well worth the $39
investment, especially since I previously didn't have any torpedo levels.
I'll need it again in the half bathroom very soon.

I put the last coat of Tung Oil Finish on three vanity drawer fronts.
Once they're dry, I'll reinstall them and start the next three.
I finished patching the hole from one of the old vanity light fixtures
well enough to put a coat of Zinsser B-I-N on it to seal it and test
fit the new fixture. All is well. See more pictures
here.

I put a coat of joint compound on the oblong hole from the previous
light fixture above the left side of the vanity in the master bathroom.
It's starting to look pretty good. One more coat should fill the hole,
then I can skim coat it, sand, and prime it.
The second Elk Lighting 52002/3 fixture is on its way here. It should
be here on Friday.
I started refinishing three more of the vanity drawer faces. They've
been sanded and stained. Tomorrow I'll start applying tung oil finish
(which is really just thinned varnish).

-
I put another coat of spackling compound in the oblong hole in the drywall
where the old light fixture was installed. It will need at least one more
coat to fill it before sanding.
- September 6, 2015
-
I placed some window screen behind the oblong hole in the drywall where
the old light fixture was, and started filling the hole with spackling
compound.
It's worth noting that I suspect the same PVC waste pipe I found
yesterday would be in the way of a recessed medicine cabinet in the
half bathroom. That's good to know since I have been hemming and hawing
over recessed versus surface mount. Now I can take some measurements
to determine if the waste pipe is between the studs where I intend to
install a medicine cabinet in the half bathroom.

Since I have decided that I'm going with chrome hardware in the half
bathroom, I ordered a second Elk Lighting Acadia 52002/3 and will use
them in the master bathroom. They're brushed nickel, which will match
the hardware theme there. I got a good deal on this second one:
$201.60 with free shipping by using a 25% off coupon at
1stoplighting.com.

I installed a Rev-A-Shelf 5WB1-1520-CR under the left sink in the
master bathroom, and another one under the right sink. No more digging
around on my hands and knees to get something out of the back of the
cabinet under the sinks. I put some plastic ridged shelf liner down
before I mounted the Rev-A-Shelf units.

I bought a pair of Cree TW Series 65W equivalent 2700K dimmable LED 6"
retrofit recessed downlights at Home Depot. I installed one of them to
compare to the original bulb/lens setup. It's a night and day difference.

I finished installing the second Delta Kinley faucet in the master bathroom.
I installed the final brushed nickel knob on the vanity.

I installed a Lutron Maestro MACL-153MLH in the master bathroom to replace
the ancient rocker switch. All four of the light switches in the master
bath are now Lutron Maestro.
I installed new knobs on the master bathroom vanity. One of the sixteen
I bought at Lowe's was apparently a return that they put back on the shelf;
the threads were completely stripped out. I'll buy a replacement tomorrow.
I will install the second Delta Kinley faucet tomorrow or over the
weekend. I'm not happy with the water flow from these faucets, but that's
what happens with regulations. Sadly, low-flow faucets mean I just wind up
leaving them on a lot longer while I wait for hot water to reach them.
And leave the room while I wait, which means I'll waste even more water.
I don't leave my faucets running unnecessarily, I turn them off frequently
while I'm using them. I even turn off my shower faucet multiple times
while showering; I am water conscious. But sadly most people are not,
so we wind up with a forced-upon-us solution.

I installed the first Delta Kinley 35730LF faucet in the master
bathroom.
I installed one of the Baldwin wall plates (single GFCI for the hot
tub timer). While trying to install the 4-gang plate for the light
switches, I broke one of the screws. I'll need to pick some up at
Lowe's (item 26194). While I'm there I should pick up a Lutron
MIR-600THW for the hot tub lights, an MACL-153MLH for the shower light
and a pair of Pass & Seymour 1595NTLTRCC4 outlets.
One of the issues with the 4-gang light switch box is that the 4-gang
box was poorly installed; it's crooked and comes too far out on one end,
and hence gets in the way of the wall plate screws. I might be able to
shave it back a bit with my Dremel.

I removed one of the old sink faucets. I installed the drain for one of
the new Delta Kinley 35730LF faucets I bought from
Home Depot. I need some
3/8" compression to 1/2" FIPS supply lines to finish the
installation. I can't find any 12" ones on the
Home Depot web site, nor the
Lowe's web site. Maybe that's a
good thing, since I no longer trust many of the supply lines from the
big box stores. I ordered some from
McMaster-Carr.

I installed the second towel ring in the master bathroom. I also
installed the glass shelf.
I ordered new wall plates for the master bathroom from Wayfair.
More of the Baldwin Classic Square Bevel design: a 4742.150.CD 4-gang
for the light switches and exhaust fan and some 4743.150.CD for the
Jacuzzi timer and wall outlets. they should be here on Thursday.
I need to replace the wall outlets, and I still have plans to
replace the light switches for the shower and jacuzzi.

I bought some hardware for the master bathroom. I don't know how the
previous owners dealt with towels, since there were no towel bars in the
master bathroom except a single 18" on the end of the vanity. I've
never used this towel bar because it's too close to the floor for bath
towels. I've been hanging my towel on the shower door, but it was time
to install towel bars. There were also no towel rings for hand towels,
and no toilet paper holder.
Since there is no good location near the shower for a towel bar, I
installed a robe hook on the pillar near the shower door. I'll use this
to hold my towel while I'm in the shower. I installed a toilet paper
holder near the toilet. I installed a double 24" towel bar up high
on the wall next to the vanity. A second will be installed underneath
it tomorrow. I installed a towel ring to the right of the vanity mirror.
A second will be installed on the wall to the left of the vanity tomorrow.
I bought a matching glass shelf, but haven't decided where I'm going to
install it. It might go above the toilet to hold potpourri or the like,
though my original intent was to put it to the left of the vanity to hold
my toothbrush charger and other items.
All of these pieces are from the Moen Sage collection, with a
spot-resistant satin nickel finish. Obviously they don't match the
original brass pieces that remain in the master bathroom, but those will
be replaced in due time since I hate the look of brass hardware.

I bought a new 6x10 wall register at
Home Depot to replace the
severely rusted one near the toilet. It's the same one I used in the
laundry room: the frount louvers can be individually adjusted to pount
in any direction left to right, and the on/off lever is directly
attached to the inner louvers and recessed. Hence panting it is of no
consequence to its operation. It's also a high-flow unit, the front
louvers are further apart than typical.

Given the awkward location of the main light switch in the master bathroom,
I installed a Lutron MSCL-OP153M occupancy sensing dimmer. Now the lights over
the sinks come on when I enter the bathroom. I have them set to turn off 30
minutes after occupancy is no longer detected. The sensor will not detect me
in the shower, hence the long timeout. There's a separate light for the shower,
and I'll probably put that one on X10 and use an EagleEye near the shower to
control it. Then I can reduce the timeout of the main light switch to 5 or
15 minutes.
